On Saturday my gentleman-friend and I went Montague, MA to see for ourselves whether the rumored mill was in any way as delightful as we had heard. It is, in fact, worth the 2 hr. drive (which is scenic now, and may be spectacular in the fall). The route does test the navigator's faith with every inexplicable kink, but shelve your doubts - the directions do work.

The mill itself is contorted enough to be pleased with yourself for finding your way around, with chilling views of the waterfall below (which, by the way, is accessible down a little leafy path). The book selection is fair in fiction, good in theology, poor in math. That is, they have everything Mc & Moore had before someone with more spare time than you bought the book you want. They have good loitering furniture everywhere, with firm surfaces not only for the stack you're going to sort through the moment you finish the present chapter of the one in your hand, but also to set the remarkably clever beverage you acquired from the Lady Killigrew upon.

The Lady Killigrew Cafe is even more pleasantly post-modern than their web-wizard has managed to convey. I had a lovely spicy noodle thing with vegetables that had been cooked slightly before being chilled and a white beer with raspberry lambic ice cubes.

So, whether you give it a morning, an afternoon, or an evening, Go. And if you find something you like, Buy It in order to prove that we treasure places like this as much as we appreciate the convenience of the internet age in pointing out where we can find them.

You know what they say about avoiding the rumored mill....
